CHICHA LIBRE'S SPRING TOUR.
Brooklyn Band To Bring Its Psychedelic Cumbias to Austin
at Mohawk April 27th
The name Chicha comes from a type of corn liquor favored by the Incas in pre-Colombian days. It is also the name given to a new wave of Peruvian cumbias, which started out in the 70's. Chicha was loosely inspired by Colombian accordion-driven cumbias but incorporated the distinctive electric sounds of 60's psychedelic rock organ, surf guitars and moog synthesizers. Chicha Libre, which was started three years ago as a way to pay tribute to this forgotten music, uses a similar instrumentation and draws on most of the same sources.
Chicha Libre's debut album, Sonido Amazonico features cover songs from the era alongside originals arranged not only in the sound of the time, but using the spirit of Chicha's syncretism. The result is a slightly updated take on the genre: a sound indebted to the Amazonian pioneers, but relevant to 21st century Brooklyn.
Barbès Records is proud to have been the first label to promote Chicha outside of Peru - The Roots of Chicha, which documents the best Peruvian groups of the 70's has proven to be a success in the US as well as in Japan and Europe. Mainstream Peruvian publications have written about the cd, shedding light on a subculture they had never before acknowledged.
The music of Chicha Libre has also been recognized in Peru where the band has been featured on mainstream TV shows and numerous magazines. Chicha Libre has also been invited to play as one of the headliners for a first ever Chicha Festival in Lima.
Chicha Libre includes musicians associated with the Barbes scene (a club co-owned by two of the musicians in the band: Olivier Conan and Vincent Douglas) and includes Joshua Camp (One Ring Zero) on Electravox; Olivier Conan (Las Rubias del Norte) on Cuatro and vocals; Nicholas Cudahy (Combustible Edison) on bass, Vincent Douglas (Bebe Eiffel) on guitar and veteran percussionists Greg Burrows (Andy Statman) and Timothy Quigley (Romashka).
Chicha Libre has toured across the US and was invited to perform at Globalfest at Webster Hall - North America's largest World Music showcase. The band has performed at such prestigious venues as The Montreal Jazz Festival, The Chicago World Music Festival, The Festival International de Louisiane, Celebrate brooklyn and the Miller Theater at Columbia University . Its music was used for a memorable Ayahuasca trip episode on tv show Weeds and was featured on a National Geographic tv special this spring. Its cd was released in Europe by Crammed Disc and in Latin America by Random Records.
