STRING WIZARDS
An Evening of Rare Films and Live Performance.
Celebrating the Great String Instrumentalists of the 1920s, 30s, and 40s
THE WIZARD OF THE STRINGS is a half-hour film portrait of Roy Smeck (1900-1994), a star of 1920s vaudeville and master of the guitar, banjo, Hawaiian steel guitar, and ukulele. Combining contemporary concert appearances, archival footage, and interviews with Roy and some of his show biz contemporaries, including singing cowboy Gene Autry, crooner Arthur Tracy (The Street Singer), and Hawaiian uke virtuoso King Bennie Nawahi. THE WIZARD OF THE STRINGS captures the unique life and times of an under-appreciated musical pioneer. The film, which received an Academy Award nomination in 1986, will be introduced by its writer/producer, Alan Edelstein.
Followed by A SELECTION OF VINTAGE FILM CLIPS
Local film/video archivist Russell Scholl has dug deep into the vault to compile a selection of hot musical clips for your enjoyment. You'll dig the vintage jazz, pop and blues sights and sounds (Soundies, short musical subjects and more) -- as you witness all manner of string virtuosi performing mind-boggling feats of daring and wonder on the frets! (30 minutes)
BRAIN CLOUD
"My brain is cloudy, my soul is upside-down... When I get that low-down feeling, I know the blues must be someplace around." (Bob Wills) The Brain Cloud's brand of western swing features original arrangements and authentic transcriptions that borrow heavily from the 1946-1947 Tiffany radio recordings from western swing king Bob Wills & his Texas Playboys. These recordings captured the Texas Playboys at their most edgy, raw, and unrestrained. The Brain Cloud includes Dennis Lichtman (mandolin/fiddle), Tamar Korn, of the Cangelosi Cards (vocals), Michael Gomez (guitar), Raphael McGregor (lap steel guitar), Andrew Hall (bass), and Kevin Dorn (drums). 8:00pm
THE SOUNDS OF TARAAB
Music of Zanzibar. A little over 100 years ago, the Sultan of Zanzibar sent his court musicians abroad to study. They returned and 'Taraab' was born. A spicy blend of East African Rhythms, Arabic modalities, and Indian influences,'Taraab' is sung in Kiswahili and is popular in the coastal cities of Tanzania and Kenya. "The Sounds of Taraab" features vocalist Alsarah accompanied by oud master Haig Manookian, Ismail Butera on accordion and vocals, Michael Hess on violin and nai flute, and a duo percussion team of Tiye Giraud and Nicole Lecorgne 8:00pm

Sat 09/1
LAS RUBIAS DEL NORTE
Their sound is a re-invention, a nostalgic throwback to a time and place mostly imagined where Peruvian waltzes, Andean huaynos and Cuban Guajiras mix with French opera, Cowboy tunes and Bollywood classics. The result plays like a dreamy soundtrack with classical harmonies set to a Latin beat. Their new album, Ziguala is an attempt to imagine what a pop record would sound like had the global Latin influence which was so prevalent until the early 60's had continued its course without interruption. The tracks on the album are re-interpretations of songs from Spain, France, Peru, India, Mexico, Greece, Venezuela, Colombia and Naples. Ziguala is not so much a latin record as it is a pop record that uses a latin vocabulary. Think of it as the opposite of Rock en Español, itself a Latin genre which uses a rock vocabulary. 10:00pm
THE MANDINGO AMBASSADORS. Every Wednesday
In the 1960's and 1970's, the government of Guinea engaged in a campaign known as Authenticité. It was a drive to create a new musical movement that would be specifically Guinean, but would include the modern wonders that were the electric guitar, the electric bass and the drumset. Musicians were given instruments and orchestras were formed. Surprisingly, the results proved mesmerizing and a myriad new bands were born. Many of them would go on to have a profound and lasting impact on African music. Mamady Kouyate was one of those pioneers. He played in various bands - his own band, Les Ambassadeurs du Mandingue, being one of them - but is probably best known as the guitarist in the the classic Bembeya Jazz National. Kouyate, who now lives in NY, has reformed the Mandingo Ambassadors, updating the sound of his youth, but keeping it very close to the standard of Authenticité. The new All-Star band includ es Ismael Kouyate - vocals; Mamady Kourouma - guitar; Oran Etkin - tenor s

ax & clarinets; Sylvain Leroux - flute, tambin and alto sax; Andy Algire - drums; Nick Cudahy - bass and Mamady Kouyate - guitar. “dazzling vocal and guitar patterns over a rhythm section that is like a perfect system” Ben Ratliff, NY Times. 10:00pm
COOPER-MOORE DUO & WILLIAM PARKER
Cooper-Moore and William Parker are fixtures of the NYC free jazz / creative music scene who have collaborated in many groups over the past few decades, notably Parker’s In Order to Survive quartet and Little Huey Creative Music Orchestra. Most recently, both men appear on the debut recording of the William Parker Organ Quartet, “Uncle Joe’s Spirit House,” to be released in October. Duo gigs are quite rare and special events, with the most recent such performance having taken place way back in 2005 Their collaborations are characterized by spontaneous fire, spirit, and dashes of humor. Though primarily known in the jazz world as a pianist, Cooper-Moore has also developed a unique vocabulary on instruments of his own design, construction, and occasionally invention. Somewhat similarly, William Parker is renowned as a bassist, but he also frequently incorporates double-reed, percussion, and string instruments from around the world into his improvisations.

10:00pm

Thu 09/09

10:00pm

Thu 09/09

10:00pm

MARIANNE DISSARD
Based in Tucson, Arizona, Marianne Dissard composes chansons with a strong Americana flavor. Her last album, L’Entredeux, was cowritten and produced by a fellow Tucsonian, Joey Burns (of Calexico fame) and has earned raves on both sides of the Atlantic. She is also a filmmaker and a performance artist whose work has been presented throughout Europe. Her French lyrics have a timeless edge, and the sometimes cinematic arrangements evoke Western ballads, polka, and the music of Françoise Hardy and Serge Gainsbourg, while always retaining a strong personal identity. Check her out on Barbes Records' new release - New French Chanson: Eight For Matisse. 8:00pm
ETHAN LIPTON & HIS ORCHESTRA
A soulful singer of wry, original songs, Ethan Lipton delivers tales of misfortunate everymen in deft, lyrical packages. His songs are steeped in American traditions of yore (jazz, blues, country), but his subjects are thoroughly modern (thrift stores, office crushes, renaissance faires). It all adds up to a hilariously cockeyed view of an odd, disjointed age (Popmatters called him "a man out of time"). Lipton is joined by his incomparable band (Eben Levy on guitar; Ian Riggs on standup bass; Vito Dieterle on sax), with which he recently toured and recorded his third alb 8:00pm
ARNAUD FLEURENT-DIDIER
The Paris based singer and composer's aesthetic owes much to Michel Legrand, the orchestral experimentation of Serge Gainsbourg and the instrumental music of the band Air (with which he has performed). His latest release, "France-Culture," has become a radio hit in France as well as a bit of a polarizing manifesto. His lyrics are a bridge to pre-1968 preoccupations and reminiscent of the dialogues of early Eric Rohmer movies. Check him out on Barbes Records' new release - New French Chanson: Eight For Matisse. 8:00pm
10:00pm
ANDY STATMAN
A truly extraordinary artist, Andy Statman began his career in the 70's as a virtuoso Mandolinist who studied and performed David Grisman, went on to study clarinet the legendary Dave Tarras and became one of the main architect of a Klezmer revival which started out 30 years ago and has since informed and influenced folk, Jazz and improvised music forms. Andy draws equally from hassidic melodies, folk tunes from new and old worlds alike and Albert Ayler-influenced free-improv. The result reads like a very personal search for the sacred based both on traditions and introspection. $10 8:00pm
BAD REPUTATION
Pierre de Gaillande sings Georges Brassens. From the 50's through the late 70's, Georges Brassens redefined French Chanson. He was an anarchist bard whose songs were sometimes raunchy, sometimes polemic, often poignant, and always steeped in classic French poetry. He went on to become one the most emblematic French singer of the 20th century. His songs, unlike those of his friend Jacque Brel, never became known outside of France, mostly because of the literary aspect of his lyrics.
Franco-American singer and composer Pierre de Gaillande has translated a number of Brassens songs. He has stuck to the rhyming scheme and verse length of the original songs, thus matching the melodies perfectly. He has re-arranged the music with a cinematic sensibility, using a combination of guitars, clarinets, lapsteel and Charango. Best way to describe the record would be to compare it to a perfect movie adaptation of a book classic. Think Stanley Kubrick or Raoul Ruiz 10:00pm
8:00pm
10:00pm
ANSAMBL MASTIKA
We blend these tumultuous and irresistible sounds with the spontaneity and global sensibility of downtown jazz musicians in an approach we like to call the ‘New Balkan Uproar’.
