BARBES TURNS TEN THIS MAY.
May 1st through May 6th
The Brooklyn club will celebrate with the help many of its friends.

The Brooklyn bar and performance space, which opened in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn on May Day of 2002, has presented over seven thousand events in the past ten years. Barbès is thrilled to announce that after renewing its lease - and save an unforeseen natural or unnatural disaster - it should be busy presenting another few thousand shows in the next ten years.

Started by French expats Olivier Conan and Vincent Douglas at a time when Brooklyn had not yet fully experienced the cultural explosion it is now known for, Barbès’ original goal was to provide a space and a community for musicians – many of whom were based in Brooklyn and needed an alternative to Manhattan clubs which didn't always foster original or non-commercial projects.

Times have changed. The epicenter of New York’s creative energy has long since shifted to Brooklyn, and Barbès is proud to have been one of the participant in this transformation.

Barbès never focused on any particular type of music. As a result, it was named as one of the ten best jazz clubs in the country by Playboy magazine as well as the second best World Music venue nationwide by the readers of About.com. Barbès has also been an active presenter of classical music, improvised music, Americana, and just about any kind of quality music that will suit its small backroom.

The club has favored long running residencies which have contributed to developing such talent as Slavic Soul Party, Stephane Wrembel, Jenny Scheinman, Chicha Libre or The Mandingo Ambassadors - all of which have established flourishing careers outside of the club.

Slavic Soul Party has become the country’s pre-eminent neo Balkan brass band, Stephane Wrembel scored the theme song to Woody Allen’s last movie and played live at the Academy Awards, Chicha Libre has exported its psychedelic cumbia back to South America where it has found a large audience and Jenny Scheinman has made her mark as one of the most sought after jazz violinist in the country.

Other notable achievements by musicians who have long been associated with Barbès would include the Parker String Quartet, wihch was in residence at Barbès for most of 2008 and went on to win a grammy last year for best Chamber Music group as well as many of the artists on our associated record label, barbès Records, including Hazmat Modine, Pierre de Gaillande and Las Rubias del Norte.

To celebrate, a number of performers will take over our backroom from May 1st through may 6th - a precise schedule will be posted our website, the first week in April, but they will include: Rachelle Garniez, Anthony Coleman, Michael Attias, Andy Statman, Catherine Russell, Smokey Hormel, Matt Darriau, Erik Friedlander, Matt Munisteri, Michi Wiancko, Stephane Wrembel, The Parker String Quartet, Las Rubias del Norte, Banning Eyre, Chris Speed, Jim Black, Oscar Noriega, Banda de Los Muertos, Chicha Libre, Mavrothi Kontanis, The Roulette Sisters, Wade Schuman of Hazmat Modine, Slavic Soul Party, Lucia Pulido, Don Rauf, Scott Kettner, Rob Curto, One Ring Zero, Pierre de Gaillande, and more tba.

Other illustrious performers who have graced our stage, but will not be present, have included Ethan Lipton, Madeleine Peyroux, Les Primitifs du Futur, Guy Klucevsek, Eszter Balint, Opera on Tap, Gyan Riley, Marta Topferova, The Microscopic Septet, Bill Frisell, Brooklyn Qawwali Party, Rick Moody, David Del Tredici, Robbie Fullks, Frank London, Marc Ribot, The Wiyos, Seb Martel, Norah Jones, Red Barraat, Son de Madera, Sonagi Project, Alash, Gina Leishman, Nation Beat, Roy Nathanson, Bruce Cockburn, Alex Meixner, Greta Gertler, Sanda Weigl, Polka Madre, Danny Kalb, Sxip Shirey, Doug Wamble, Beat Circus and many, many more.

HAZMAT MODINE PLAYS LE POISSON ROUGE WITH THE WIYOS
Saturday, April 14th, 7:00 - 10:00

HAZMAT MODINE plays tuba and harmonica-driven blues-infused Americana with borrowings from Eastern Europe and Africa. For the past seven years, the band has been touring extensively throughout Europe where their musical juxtapositions of African syncopation, 60's rock, R & B, and American roots traditions has proved immensely popular. Their recent CD, CICADA, was number one on the world music charts this past summer in Europe and includes collaborations with the Kronos Quartet, the Gangbe Brass Band from Benin, Natalie Merchant, Erik Della Penna, and Michael Farkas of The Wiyos. The CD was awarded the Charles Cros Grand Prize in France for best Blues record in 2011, and voted Number 2 for all of 2011 in the World Music Charts in Europe. One of HAZMAT MODINE was featured in the recent Oscar nominated Wim Wenders' movie PINA.

Following their Spring European tour, Hazmat Modine will be unveiling new material with special guests tba.

"HAZMAT MODINE manages to pull of the extraordinary feat of sounding at once familiar and at the same time unlike anything you've ever heard before. Their sound is joyously eclectic and comes across with extraordinary wit, style and verve. It's clearly steeped in American roots, but not enslaved by them, and encompasses a broad range of source material that provides an unusual amount of depth and nuance." Rick Webb

THE WIYOS CD RELEASE SHOW

Much like the crime driven street gang of New York they take their name from (The Whyos, circa 1870's), The Wiyos have ceaselessly metamorphosed their trade. Their Vaudeville-like performances reached its zenith in 2009 when they were featured in the BBC television documentary, “Folk America – Hollerers, Stompers and Old-Time Ramblers”. Later their modern interpretations of iconic blues artists like Blind Willie McTell led them to be hand picked by Bob Dylan as the opening act for his 28-date summer tour with Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp. Today, Twist emerges with the band plugged in and the music turned up. They are an unruly, eclectic bunch and their music has something to say. This is not standard "you done me wrong" stuff. This is a mature band with concepts and ideas.

Their new albume, "Twist" is undoubtedly The Wiyos' strongest and boldest work to date. It is an original song cycle loosely based on L. Frank Baum's, The Wizard of Oz and Joseph Campbell's, The Hero’s Journey. The band's central writers Michael Farkas and Teddy Weber have taken their nine years of touring roots festivals, side show tents, strip clubs, coffee houses, theatres, backyard parties, performing arts centers, barn dances, churches and even stadiums and mashed it all together with their uncanny knack for merging and fusing numerous American musical styles. Preview performances of the new material have met with rave reviews.

"Simultaneously tear-jerking and disturbing, this new material invokes McCartney at his most melancholy, Lennon at his most acid-inflected, and Oz in all of its most surreal, Technicolour glory." -Backroadsmusic.co.uk, 2011

92Y Tribeca, Friday 01/06 and Saturday 01/07

Intended to reach out to musical omnivores, Omniphonic Festival brings together ten groups from around the world that all blur the line between traditional and non traditional music, heritage and borrowings from close and far away neighbors. Expect Greek son, American Chanson, Tuvan blues, Italo-carpathian anthems, Transglobal bluegrass and other everyday hybrids.

Admission is free for APAP badge holders

Monday Jan 6th:

8:00 pm
JAYME STONE
Two-time Juno-winning banjoist Jayme Stone makes music inspired by folk traditions from around the world. His latest album, Room of Wonders, explores music from Norway, Sweden, Bulgaria, Brazil, Italy and North America. The repertoire includes a movement from Bach’s French Suite, a Moorish sword-fighting dance and Stone’s lush, edgy originals.

9:00 pm
LAS RUBIAS DEL NORTE
Their sound is a re-invention, a nostalgic throwback to a time and place mostly imagined where Peruvian waltzes, Andean huaynos and Cuban Guajiras mix with French opera, Cowboy tunes and Bollywood classics. The result plays like a dreamy soundtrack with classical harmonies set to a Latin beat.

10:00 pm
HAZMAT MODINE
The NY-based global blues band has been traveling the world for a few years now - collaborating with such people as varied as Benin's Gangbe Brass Band, the Kronos quartet, Natalie Merchant and Huun Huur Tu. They were recently awarded a French Charles Cros award and their music is featured in Wim Wenders' latest film about Pina Bausch.

11:00 pm
JOSE CONDE
The Cuban-American singer and composer remains as unpredictable as ever, borrowing sounds from South Africa, Brazil, Peru and urban America as well as rootsy rhythms and humor undeniably Cuban.

12:00 pm
RED BARAAT
An Indian brass band rooted in Bhangra, funk, Go-go and jazz, Red Baraat has become a hit on the world scene, proving yet again that brass music has the power to move masses the way early rock and roll did.

Saturday January 7th.

8:00pm
BAD REPUTATION
Pierre de Gaillande sings George Brassens in English. A tribute and a re-creation of the universe of the French anarchist poet which has won the admiration of Brassens fans and new audiences.

9:00pm
FOLKLORE URBANO
Colombian composer Pablo Mayor meshes Colombian roots music with big band sounds and urban rhythms in ways that both showcase the singularity of the music - and makes people dance

10:00pm
LES CHAUDS LAPINS
Les Chauds Lapins (“the hot rabbits”) re-arranges long-forgotten French classics from the 20's and 40's for banjo-ukes, string trio, guitar and winds, mixing the rootsiness of early American jazz with the lushness of a Bernard Hermann film soundtrack.

11:00pm
MARCO CALLIARI
Montreal resident and former member of trash metal band Anonymus, Marco Calliari explores the music of the Italian diaspora with nods to Flamenco, Klezmer and circus music.

12:00pm
SLAVIC SOUL PARTY
at DROM
Jan 7th, 2011 7:00pm-11:00pm

With
Smokey Hormel, Chicha Libre,
Raya Brass band, Cheick Hamala Diabate,
No BS Brass! and DJ Geko Jones.

For the past few years, Barbès has been presenting a Manhattan showcase timed to coincide with the APAP conference - an annual rite which, every January, brings musicians from around the world to New York. This year, Barbès has teamed up with fellow brooklynites, label Electric Cowbell, to bring a particularly exciting roster to the always suspect borough of Manhattan.

Electric Cowbell is a new record label dedicated to release 45rpm seven inch vinyl of new talent (from the Debo Band, to Talibam!, Khaira Arby and Superhuman Happiness). Like barbès, the label doesn't believe distinctions of genre are always pertinent and promotes like-minded musicians who operate in mediums as varied as Funk, Afrobeat, Latin psychedelia, Balkan music or Second Line brass music.

Barbès is a Brooklyn club which, next spring, will be celebrating ten years of eclectic programming - from classical string quartets to Ukrainian polyphonies, Forro and American Qawwali.

This edition of our Manhattan invasion will feature the congolese musings of Smokey Hormel, the electric cumbias of Chicha LIbre, the improvisations of Malian griot Cheick Hamal Diabate, No BS! Brass' brand of funk, the Brooklyn Balkan hybrid that is Raya and the Pan-latin tropical sound of DJ Geko Jones.

8:00pm
NO BS! BRASS BAND
A powerful brass band from Richmond VA that infuses the spirit of New Orleans into its original East Coast modern funk. They draw inspiration from funk, jazz, klezmer, calypso, and Led Zeppelin and while most members have conservatory training, they strive for heart-pounding energy and uncontrollable dancing.

8:45pm
CHEIKH HAMALA DIABATE
Cheick Hamala Diabate is a Malian griot and a master of the ngoni, a traditional instrument. He started his career at a young age playing with Malian musical greats, including Toumani Diabate (a first cousin), Oumou Sangare, Ali Farka Toure and Salif Keita. Upon coming to the US, Cheick Hamala was intrigued by the resemblance between his ngoni and the American banjo, even sharing tunings and picking styles. He has since learned to play the banjo at a virtuosic level, including collaborations with Bela Fleck and Bob Carlin. Cheick’s album of banjo duets with Carlin, From Mali to America, was nominated for a grammy in 2007 for Best Traditional World Music Album.

9:30pm
SMOKEY'S SECRET FAMILY
Smokey Hormel’s résumé reads like a history of American popular music over the decades. He has worked closely with Beck, Tom Waits, Johnny Cash, and Neil Diamond. His projects have included the Brazilian-influenced Smokey and Miho, as well as an ongoing tribute to Western swing. His latest endeavor is an idiosyncratic take on early Congolese rumba. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, African musicians looked to Cuba for inspiration. They recognized African roots in the music but were also captivated by its cosmopolitan aspect, which mirrored the evolution of their own culture. Using the electric guitar—fast becoming the symbol of urban culture—they forged a new hybrid that became an early soundtrack of decolonization. Hormel has hybridized the music further and taken it to the Americas for the second time. Keeping its pre-rock roots intact, he relies on a core sound of “wild guitars bursting through small amps afloat on a sea of hand drums
and shakers."

10:10pm
CHICHA LIBRE
Chicha LIbre is a Brooklyn collective made up of French, American, Venezuelan and Mexican musicians who mix up covers of Peruvian electric cumbia with original compositions in French, Spanish and English, re-interpretation of 70’s pop classics as well as cumbia versions of pieces by the likes of Satie, Love and Joe Dassin. In the past year, the group has brought its music to Istanbul, Madrid, Berlin and Copenhagen, but has been especially welcome in South America where its mix of Tropical experimentation and psychedelia has proved extremely popular. Chicha Libre's second album is a psychedelic bender with a majority of original compositions and nods to Wagner and Los Mirlos. It will be released by Barbès Records and Crammed disc in April of 2012.

11:00pm
RAYA BRASS BAND.
Raya Brass Band gleefully mashes up the music of Eastern Europe with funky American dance grooves. Featuring odd meters, unusual scales and a fine helping of gorgeous Balkan and Romany (Gypsy) melodies played on reeds, trumpet, accordion, tuba and drums, Raya Brass Band slakes the thirst for something old and new at the same time, unusual and catchy, spiritedly played by some of NYC's finest Balkan folk musicians. Greg Squared (clarinet), Ben Syversen (trumpet), Matthew Fass (accordion), Don Godwin (tuba) and EJ Fry (tupan).

11:30pm and In between sets
GEKO JONES
Geko Jones is a Brooklyn-based Puerto-lombian DJ and Producer. He is a founding member of both the New York Tropical and Que Bajo?! party franchises in New York. He is also a partner and co-owner of the Dutty Artz record label with producer Matt Shadetek and DJ /Rupture. His mixes span the tropical hemispheres and collage together globally sonic hours of dancefloor mayhem. Renowned by top DJ's and producers of the digital cumbia scene in Latin America and European bass-pundits alike, Jones is one of the select few DJ's pushing forward the Latin agenda in a world wide tropical bass scene. The past five years have found him sharing a booth or collaborating with a long roster of A-list globalistas like Uproot Andy, Radioclit, ZZK, Maluca, Dub War, Toy Selectah and more.

CHICO TRUJILLO AT LOLLAPALOOZA, LE POISSON ROUGE & MoMA.
August 4th and 6th

After celebrating their tenth year anniversary with a series of concerts in Santiago, the Chilean Cumbia group seemed to have had their best year ever. Not only did they headline the first Chilean version of Lollaplallooza, but critics and audiences singled out their performance there as the most mesmerizing – and the most successful.

A two months European tour followed and now Chico Trujillo is coming to the US for just three dates.

On August 4th, they will appear at NYC’s Museum of Modern Art in the afternoon – and will play at Le Poisson Rouge in the evening.
They will then play Lollapalooza in Chicago on August 6th.

The group will also spend a couple of days at Daptone studio, working on a a new record to be released in 2012.

“Lollapalooza Chile has introduced me to a world-class party band: Chico Trujillo, a local favorite who had a huge crowd shouting along. Every party band needs a rhythm, and Aldo Asenjo, the band’s leader and singer, relies on cumbia, the beat heard in countless variations across Latin America. Cumbia often trots calmly, but Chico Trujillo’s version gallops, bounding along; now and then, the music switches into rumba, equally upbeat. Mr. Asenjo sings lyrics as chattery and percussive as some hip-hop, taking on the ups and downs of love and life, with his voice answered by chortling horns — did he borrow the arranging idea from ska bands? — and a tootling, circusy organ. Syncopation, momentum and a way of romping through pain — a party band needs them all, and Chico Trujillo has them.”

Concert Artists Guild and Barbès have teamed up for a new series of Classical music: the Upright Piano Brigade, a weekly Tuesday evening piano series that runs May - July. The series features thirteen pianists including current CAG roster musicians and alumni. This all-piano series showcases Barbès' brand-new Sauter upright piano. All concerts are at 7:00 PM.

The Sauter piano company, based in Spaichingen, in Southern Germany has an impressive lineage going back to the earliest days of the piano: the company’s founder, Johann Grimm, worked as an apprentice at the Stein piano company in Vienna, and while there helped build two pianos for Beethoven. Grimm founded his own company in 1819, the company was inherited by his nephew, Carl Sauter, and has remained in the ownership of the Sauter family ever since.

Sauter Pianos is actively developing relationships with music venues and organizations that would benefit from the use of a good piano. As part of their program, they have donated an upright Sauter 122 Schulpiano to Barbès, enabling the venue to program solo pianists ranging from classcial, to Jazz and new composers.

On Tuesday, May 3, pianist and composer Michael Brown (First Prize, 2010 CAG Victor Elmaleh Competition) kicks off the series, coupling an all-American first half with Debussy's Preludes Book II in the second half. The American set includes Gershwin Preludes and Songs, Bolcom’s Ghost Rags and Copland’s Blues. To close the set Brown pairs his own Homage to Copland with the second movement of Copland’s Piano Sonata.

The lineup for May also features Evan Shinners playing an all-Bach program on May 10; CAG alumna Tanya Bannister on May 17 in a program that includes Gubaidulina’s Chaconne, a Rachmaninoff Prelude, Janacek’s In the Mist, Chopin’s fourth Ballade & Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata; Gregg Kallor on May 24 performing works by Rachmaninoff, Chick Corea, Stravinsky, Louise Talma, Bartok & Gregg Kallor; andWilliam McNally on May 31. The full three-month schedule is listed below. Programming details will soon be announced.

The Upright Piano Brigade is the latest in a longstanding collaboration between Concert Artists Guild and Barbès. CAG’s Barbès Classical, the flagship series of the New Music/New Places initiative, began in 2006 with performances on the second Sunday of each month. Additionally, CAG has twice had artists-in-residence at Barbès—first with the Parker Quartet in the 2007-08 season (they have since gone on to win a grammy as best Chamber Group) and now with pianist/toy pianist/composer Phyllis Chen who’s second of three concerts there this Spring is on April 22.

            Wednesday March 16th, 7:00pm

LAS RUBIAS DEL NORTE was started eight years ago, when Allyssa Lamb and Emily Hurst decided to quit their classical choir and start a group of their own. The group’s sound quickly veered off its classical course, incorporating Boleros, Peruvian waltzes, Andean huaynos and Cuban Guajiras. The result plays like a dreamy soundtrack with classical harmonies set to a Latin beat. Their two first ...albums, Panamericana and Rumba Internationale, were praised by the New Yorker, NPR’s Weekend Edition and A&E’s Breakfast with the Arts.

Their third album, Ziguala, came out last spring and was a further exploration of the Latin roots of global pop music. From the 1930's through the 1950's, Latin music dominated popular music around the world. Mambos and rumbas found their way in the pop hits of Shanghai, Bollywood, Constantinople, Malaysia, Paris, Kinshasa and Japan. Then came Rock and Roll which would conquer the youth of the world - and nothing was ever the same.

Ziguala, is an attempt to imagine what a pop record would sound like had the Latin influence continued its course without interruption. The album uses electric instruments that defined the rock explosion of the 1960's - such as organs and electric guitars but its arrangements reveal a definite bias for the Latin music it is mostly inspired by.

Las Rubias del Norte is a seven piece combo which is fronted by two classically trained singers and backed by bongos, congas, bells, bass, cuatro, electric guitar, piano and organ. On the album, the band also makes use of a string quartet, vibes and marimba. The tracks are re-interpretations of songs from Spain, France, Peru, India, Mexico, Greece, Venezuela, Colombia and Naples. Ziguala is not so much a latin record as it is a pop record that uses a latin vocabulary. Think of it as the opposite of Rock en Español; a Latin genre which uses a rock vocabulary.

Las Rubias del Norte is particularly excited that their friends the Parker String Quartet, which is featured on two of the tracks, just won a Grammy for Best Chamber Group.

Las Rubias will be joined by Canadian artist Jayme Stone - a banjo player and composer who went on an eight-week trip to Mali looking for the origins of the Banjo. He ended up playing with Toumani Diabate, Mansa Sissoko and Bassekou Kouyate and the resulting album, Africa to Appalachia, iwon the 2009 Juno Award for World Music Album of the Year.

Le Poisson Rouge is located at 158 Bleecker St. - http://lepoissonrouge.com/events/artist/3148
DROM
Jan 8th, 2011 7:00pm-11:00pm

Timed to coincide with the APAP conference - an annual rite which brings musician from around the world to New York – Barbès takes part of its roster across the chilly waters of the East River to showcase some of its best talent. For the past eight years, the Brooklyn club and related label have become synonymous with adventurous eclecticism. On any typical night Barbès’ backroom will showcase a classical string quartet, Carpathian singers, an avant-garde theremin player, Brazilian Forro, Balkan Brass, a mandingo guitarist or Peruvian surf music. This year, Barbès will attempt to take Manhattan with a couple of Americans singing French swing classics, followed by the work of a French chanson icon sung in English, American Blues filtered through a giant global prism, Peruvian Chicha played a Franco-Venezuelan- American crew
and a tribute to Qawwali great Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan by a typical Brooklyn collective. Global music made local.

LES CHAUDS LAPINS 7:30pm
Kurt Hoffman and Meg Reichardt cover Charles Trenet songs and other jewels from the French 30's and 40's musical traditions accompanying themselves on banjo-ukes. Prior to their re-incarnation as French entertainers, Meg was better known as one third of the Roulette sisters and Kurt as a reed player and composer who co-led cult instrumental band the Ordinaires and recorded with such luminaries as They Might be Giants, Frank Black, Firewater, and Drink Me. They are backed by a string section composed of Karen Waltuch - violin; Ian Riggs- bass and Garo Yellin - Cello.

PIERRE DE GAILLANDE'S BAD REPUTATION 8:15
Georges Brassens songs revolutionized French Chanson in the 50's and 60's. He was an anarchist bard whose songs could be raunchy, polemic or poignant but always remained steeped in classic French poetry. He went on to become one the most emblematic French singer of the 20th century but his songs, unlike those of his friend Jacque Brel, never became known outside of France.
Franco-American singer and composer Pierre de Gaillande has translated a number of Brassens songs. He has stuck to the rhyming scheme and verse length of the original song and re-arranged the music with a great cinematic sensibility, using a combination of guitars, clarinets, lapsteel and charango. The result has been hailed on both side on the Atlantic and has even lead to a collaboration with Brassens' long time guitarist who has embrace the project.

CHICHA LIBRE 9:00pm
The Brooklyn band is at the forefront of a movement to revalorize chicha, the syncretic mix of rock, psychedelia, surf and cumbia that was popular in Peru in the 70's. As its name indicates, Chicha Libre takes liberties with the genre, adding touches of classical music, French pop as well as a general Brooklyn attitude - but keeping it all on the dance floor. The group has been featured on the show Weeds and on the Simpson's twentieth anniversary special. They have brought their eclectic psychedelic blend to Istanbul, London, Berlin, Portugal, Womex and Globalfest and, lucky them, will be in Colombia, Peru and Argentina this winter.

HAZMAT MODINE 9:45pm
Hazmat Modine plays the kind of Blues one might have found in a whorehouse in New Orleans had the city been built on the Black Sea. The band is driven by a pair of dueling harmonicas, backed by tuba, drums, guitars, and a horn section. Occasional guests play such exotic instruments as the Chinese mouth-organ, the bass sax and the normaphone. Hazmat has found an increasingly receptive audience in Europe where they have been nominated for a BBC award and tour a good part of the year. They just backed Natalie Merchant on a few songs on her latest album. Their long-awaited follow-up to Bahamut will be released this spring and will include collaborations with Natalie Merchant, Benin's extraordinary Gangbe Brass Band as well as the Kronos Quartet.

BROOKLYN QAWWALI PARTY 10:30
Paying tribute to one of the world's great vocalists, Brooklyn Qawwali Party formed to honor the legendary Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, reworking his thunderous songs for an eclectic, eleven-piece orchestra comprised of groundbreaking jazz musicians. Funky, smart, and loving, BQP captures the joyful spirit of this Pakistani folk music in a unique instrumental blend of jazz and Qawwali. With five horns, guitar, bass, harmonium, and three percussionists, this band's buoyant rhythm will be sure to get you on your feet and clapping.

  92Y Tribeca

From the1950’s through the late 70’s, the late George Brassens redefined French Chanson. He was an anarchist bard whose songs could be raunchy, sometimes polemic, often poignant, and always steeped in the classic poetry of the likes of François Villon, Apollinaire or Aragon. Brassens went on to become one the most emblematic French singer of the 20th century, setting a new standard for every French songwriter that came after him, including Serge Gainsbourg and of course, Jacques Brel, his peer and good friend.

Franco-American singer and composer Pierre de Gaillande grew up in Paris and Southern California, listening, among other things, to his dad's extensive Brassens collection. Pierre went on to play in american indie bands - He moved to NY and played bass with the Morning Glories, played guitar with Vic Chestnut and toured Russia with his own band, Melomane. He has also worked as a film composer.

For the past couple of years, Pierre also rediscovered his dad's record collection has taken on the impossible task of translating Brassens' songs, to pretty astonishing results. Sticking to the rhyming scheme and verse length of the original songs Pierre has re-arranged the music with a cinematic sensibility, using a combination of guitars, clarinets, lapsteel and charango.

The results sound nothing like a translated work. De Gaillande has managed the impossible - to translate not only the style, content and wit of the original, but also the musicality of the original recordings while using completely different arrangements. The best way to describe the project would be to compare it to the perfect movie adaptation of a book classic. Think Stanley Kubrick or Raoul Ruiz.

Earlier this year, Barbès Records released Pierre's CD of Georges Brassens songs. Now his translations are also being published in book form by literary publishing house Ugly Duckling Presse. To celebrate, UDP and Barbès Records , with the help of the cultural offices of the French Embassy, are joining forces to present a tribute concert to Brassens featuring the Bad Reputation band, Dawn Landes, Sally Ellyson (of the band HEM) and Brassens' guitarist, the legendary Joel Favreau, who will be playing the US for the very first time.

The addition of Joel Favreau to the bill is a dream come true for Pierre de Gaillande. Joel Favreau was Georges Brassens' faithful guitarist for the last fifteen years of the singer's life. His guitar lines provided a subtle yet omnipresent counterpoint to Brassens' melodies. While Joel tends to stay away from the adoring Brassens circles who have enshrined the master, he was so impressed by Pierre de Gaillande's work that he decided to lend his guitar to his project. Joel will also perform his own rendition of Brassens' music with accordionist Jean Jacques Franchin. This will be his first appearance in the US.

The evening should prove the perfect tribute to Georges Brassens: a faithful rendition of his iconoclastic spirit by performers as well-versed in iconoclasm as they are in tradition.

BANDA SINALOENSE DE LOS MUERTOS. New York's only Mexican Banda.
In the Mexican state of Sinaloa, brass bands (bandas) are part of every public celebration. In the 1940's, the pioneering Banda El Recodo started mixing up traditional brass band tunes with contemporary Mexican music - mostly ranchera - and soon transformed the idiom into a powerful new popular genre. In the 1990's, banda music experienced a renewal, especially among young Californian Mexicans, many of whom have family roots in Sinaloa. Banda music's popularity exploded in Mexico as well and has become the new urban music of choice. Banda de Los Muertos will be celebrating Cinco de Mayo with a selection of classic tunes to get dead drunk to, with a supergroup of sorts featuring alumni of Slavic Soul Party and other NY top players. With Oscar Noriega & Chris Speed - clarinets; Jakob Garchick - Sousaphone; Jim Black & Vinnie Sperrazza – percussion; Patrick Farrell & Rachel Drehman – ; Alto horn; Curtis Hasselbring & Brian Drye - trombones and many guest singers i
ncluding Olivier Conan, Jean Carla Rodea, Rana Santacruz and many more tba.

Followed by
CUMBIAGRA
Go to any party Mexico, and besides Banda music, you will hear Cumbia. While not originally from Mexico, Cumbia became hugely popular there in the 1960’s with such acts as Mike Laure. Mexico has been at the forefront of the Cumbia wave that has swept Latin America in the past few years with its sonidero and, lately, its rebajada - the slowed down cumbia which, with its strong dub elements, has become a favorite of DJs.
Cumbiagra started out playing the classic cumbias of Colombia and Mexico – with a heavy Mexcian twist, and has gone on to develop its own Mexilombian/Nuyorican mix- with Rafael Gomez on bass guitar and vocals, Gregorio “Goyo” Uribe on accordion and vocals, Brian “Lazaro” Lazarus on guitar and vocals Brian Glashow on percussion, and Hugo Moreno on trumpet

Littlefield is located at 622 Degraw between 3rd and 4th avenue, in the Gowanus section of Brooklyn.

            THE MANDINGO AMBASSADORS. Every Wednesday

In the 1960's and 1970's, the government of Guinea engaged in a campaign known as Authenticité. It was a drive to create a new musical movement that would be specifically Guinean, but would include the modern wonders that were the electric guitar, the electric bass and the drumset. Musicians were given instruments and orchestras were formed. Surprisingly, the results proved mesmerizing and a myriad new bands were born. Many of them would go on to have a profound and lasting impact on African music. Mamady Kouyate was one of those pioneers. He played in various bands - his own band, Les Ambassadeurs du Mandingue, being one of them - but is probably best known as the guitarist in the the classic Bembeya Jazz National. Kouyate, who now lives in NY, has reformed the Mandingo Ambassadors, updating the sound of his youth, but keeping it very close to the standard of Authenticité. The new All-Star band includ es Ismael Kouyate - vocals; Mamady Kourouma - gu
itar; Oran Etkin - tenor sax & clarinets; Sylvain Leroux - flute, tambin and alto sax; Andy Algire - drums; Nick Cudahy - bass and Mamady Kouyate - guitar. “dazzling vocal and guitar patterns over a rhythm section that is like a perfect system” Ben Ratliff, NY Times.
