After a South American Tour which took us to Bogota, Buenos Aires, Cordoba and Santiago as well as a detour through Los Angeles, San Francisco and Chicago, we are finally back in NY and ready to release our new album, "Canibalismo". We can't wait to share the record with you - and really hope you can make it there this Saturday.
We'll be going on at 9:00pm and playing mostly songs from the new album. Our friends Shaun Irons and Lauren Petty have created a video backdrop for the occasion, and DJ Sultan, from Mexco, will make you dance after the show. It should be a great night, we swear, and if you had any intention of coming to see us in the next few months, this would be the best opportunity.

CHICHA LIBRE is a Brooklyn collective made up of French, American, Venezuelan and Mexican musicians who play a mixture of Latin rhythms and psychedelia. Chicha refers to Peru’s particular brand of electric cumbia first made popular in the late '60s in Lima and the Amazon. While loosely inspired by Colombian cumbia, chicha incorporated Peruvian melodies, psychedelic effects, some Cuban son and everything in between—an oddly post-modern combination that was close in spirit to the Congolese rumba of Franco or the pop syncretism of Os Mutantes.

While Chicha Libre's new album, Canibalismo (out May 8, Barbès in the US and Crammed Disc worldwide) is inspired by the Peruvian Chicha explosion of the 70's, it also looks back to the Cultural Cannibalism dear to the Brazilian tropicalists and the production values of late 1960’s rock bands. The group still pays homage to the likes of Ranil and Los Mirlos, but mixes it up even more by combining mellotron and other vintage synths with African guitars, treated percussion, fuzztone and some R.D Burmans inspired arrangements.

Live Video Projections by Shaun Irons & Lauren Petty
Shaun Irons and Lauren Petty are Brooklyn based media artists who make multiple-screen installations, single-channel works, documentaries and video scores for live performance. Their work was recently seen at the Abrons Arts Center, The Chocolate Factory and Governors Island Arts Fair in New York City, and the Center for Contemporary Art, Santa Fe, NM. Their video design work has been seen at venues such as St. Ann’s Warehouse, The Public Theater, HERE Arts Center, PS 122, the Pompidou Center, Paris, Holland Dance Festival, the Venice Biennale and the BAM Next Wave Festival.

DJ SULTÁN is one of the founding members of the Mexican electro balkan combo La Internacional Sonora Balkanera; he has been spinning music since the late 90s, shaking audiences from Montreal to London and Mexico to Oaxaca with his peculiar blend of Balkan beat, funky groove, nortec vibes and Latin rock.

New Chicha Libre Album and a few shows.

Chicha Libre will release its new album, Canibalismo, this coming Tuesday, May 8th, on Barbes Records in the US and Crammed Disc worldwide.

Dear all,

Sorry to do this to you, but it's kickstarting time again. Most of you received a message a few weeks ago about our Kickstarter campaign to fund our new album, canibalismo, which will be out May 8th.

First, a million thanks to all the people who have funded us already, we are truly gratelul. however, we have barely reached the halfway mark, and only have four days to go. The way Kickstarter works, we will not see any of that money, unless our goal is met my Sunday morning.
We understand that funding an album that is already finished may sound like a strange proposition - unless you've ever used credit, in which case it will make more sense to you. We're in debt. Our kneecaps are at stake.

They are many incentives for all different levels of contributions - ranging from a copy of the cd, to an original song written especially for you.
We've also added a new reward - a copy of our album in vinyl form. It's all worth it.

Money is dirty. No doubt, but as you might have heard already, the old models governing the music industry are dead. While music is now mostly free, it still costs money to record, manufacture and promote records - not to mention to feed musicians. Being independently wealthy is a good new model, but it won't work for this band.

So we turn to you and beg.

Or rather, we are hoping to sell you a record which will not officially be released until May.

Canibalismo, our new album, is pretty much done, but we now need to settle our accounts - or about $6,000 - to pay for mixing, mastering and artwork. Not counting tour support and promotion, ....

Chicha Libre at SOB's this Saturday & Littelfield for 5 de Mayo.

CHICHA LIBRE AT SOB'S, BARBES AND CINCO DE MAYO.

We're back from a crazy South American tour which took us to Peru, holy land of Chicha, to Sao Paulo, where we played in front in 300,000 (we didn't count... ) and Recife, where we shared the stage with Arnaldo Antunes - and an amazing Argentinean tour where audiences apparently went through the trouble of memorizing our music for the sheer pleasure of singing along. We can't wait to get back to Buenos Aires. Our first show since Brazil, appropriately enough, is tomorrow night at Sounds of Brazil.

And we will celebrate CINCO DE MAYO at LITTLEFIELD right by the Gowanus. While we are not technically a Mexican band per we do boast French and Mexican band members, which makes us perfect candidates to reenact the battle of Puebla in which Mexicans routed the French army on a certain cinq mai. Banda de los Muertos will play at 9pm. Do not miss them. Chicha Libre will follow at 10:30pm

Least not last, we will resume our Mondays at Barbes on May 2d.

Should that not enough, you can always see us in Switzerland on Memorial Day Weekend.

CHICHA LIBRE AT JOE'S PUB TOMORROW NIGHT - THURSDAY 01/06. 9:30PM

A quick reminder that Chicha libre will kick off the new year at Joe's Pub with its habitual mix of Peruvian Cumbia, 1850's and 1970's psychedelia and other non sequiturs
2010 was a great chicha year - starting with an appearance on the Simpsons' anniversary special and followed by two European tours and many mondays at barbès.
2011 looks even more exciting with our first South American tour, a lot more European dates, more mondays at barbès, and who knows, maybe a few American dates.
Joe's Pub remains NYC's best venue and we are thrilled to be back. We would love to see you there...

We will also be playing a half hour set at the Barbès Records showcase at Drom this Saturday, with our friends Les Chauds Lapins, Pierre de Gaillande, Hazmat Modine and Brooklyn Qawwali Party.

And should you find yourself in Colombia this month, we will be playing in Bogota, at Festival Centro on January 22d.

And of course, every Monday at Barbès.

Featuring Chicha Libre plus djs Sonido Chichadelico, Olivier Conan, Das Booty of Electric Cowbell and more

Three years after the release of The Roots of Chicha compilation, which went on to become a cult classic, here comes the long awaited second volume. This installment is not so much a sequel as an attempt to rectify some of the biases and inaccuracies of the first volume. Volume two focuses more on the urban aspect of the music and less on the Amazonian side. It highlights some lesser-known bands, and it also broadens its scope to include some of the early Cuban-influenced groups who would play such a crucial role in the elaboration of the chicha sound, as well as some of the later bands who play in the more Andean style that came to be referred to as chicha. More roots. More chicha

At hand, to help celebrate, Chicha Libre will play a live set of its own take on the genre (10:00PM) and various DJs will dig deep into their own chicha collection.

Back to work, on Labor Day no less, after some time off and a couple of European shows - including a memorable Berlin show backing up Ranil - one of the legendary chichero from the Amazonian city of Iquitos. His first show outside of Peru. Our first show with him but probably not our last.

On Monday the 6th, our friend Damian Quiñones will be screening some classic salsa films
On Monday the 13th, DJ Chichadelico will be spinning some classic Peruvian Cumbia starting at 8pm and in between sets. Don't miss it.
